Verizon appears to be going through an outage as the carrier’s 3G services aren’t working in some parts of the US, while the 4G network doesn’t work at all regardless of where you are. Although Verizon hasn’t officially acknowledged the problem via its official Twitter or Facebook accounts, there are numerous reports on the carrier’s forums, all of them saying that calling and data services don’t work.

The Big Red’s Twitter account suggests that there might be a hardware-related problem with some of the handsets affected by the outage, but judging by the behavior of the devices, we can confirm that it’s an outage. Like said, the Verizon support forums are full of new threads saying that users are experiencing issues when trying to make a phone call or when trying to access the internet.

This is the first Verizon outage in December and it couldn’t have come at a worse timing as many people are preparing their small Christmas vacation or the New Year’s party. Anyway we’re pretty sure that the problems will be solved in the near future as the carrier’s engineers are surely working to ensure that you’re going to have a nice Christmas.

It’s been a tough day for the Big Red as it has just found out that the Department of Justice will investigate the company’s attempt to enlarge its spectrum thanks to an agreement with Comcast and Time Warner Cable. It’s unknown whether this will have the same effect as it did with the proposed AT&T – T-Mobile merger.

Update: Verizon has announced that it’s aware of the outage and that it’s working around the clock to fix the issues in order to not cause any problems to its customers.

Update 2: The Big Red said that it has solved most of the problems with the 3G network in most areas. Please, do let us know if you’re still having problems in your area! Also it would be nice to know what errors have you encountered while trying to place a call.

Update 3: It seems like the 4G network outage will last for a few more hours until Verizon fixes everything. Apparently, the engineers are taking a good look at the 4G LTE infrastructure to see what really happened. Meanwhile, 4G services are down in all areas. Stay tuned, we will let you know when the carrier says that everything should be fine.
