SOPA Creator, Lamar Smith, Announces That Markup Will Continue Next Month Despite White House Criticism
Related
Several days ago the White House has issued a response to the “We The People” petition where the people asked the Obama Administration to veto the SOPA bill if it reaches the President’s desk. While the White House said that it will not immediately reject the proposal, it announced that in its current form, SOPA, will never make it.
SOPA puts the freedom of speech in danger and we will not tolerate that, said a few Obama representatives. They said that online piracy is an interesting subject which needs to be addressed in the near future, but SOPA is not the answer. The Obama administration asked the House Judiciary Committee to come up with another law that doesn’t put the freedom of the internet in danger.
Today marks the beginning on official SOPA online protests when many popular websites have announced that they will close down their servers for the day. Wikipedia, for example, has shut down its website for 24 hours, while Reddit has decided to shut down its site for 12 hours until 8PM. Craigslist, BoingBoing, Google, and many others have spoken out against SOPA as well.
If anybody of you thought that the House Judiciary Committee will back down, then you were wrong because it has the support of many companies who provided a lot of cash in order to get what they want. According to Lamar Smith, the House Judiciary Committee Chair, SOPA will be back in February.
Mr. Smith said that the markup will keep going forward as of next month with the help of the both republicans and democrats. The money coming from the companies supporting SOPA should be enough for everybody therefore the two political parties will definitely create a law to suit their interests.
Lamar Smith said that his colleagues from the Senate and the House will create a revised SOPA in February and then they will immediately send it to the White House in order to “save jobs” and to protect the intellectual property of the companies.
Apparently, the internet is a great way for the “foreign thieves” to steal IP from America. Mr. Smith refer to the people who pirate digital content from the US, probably thinking that people in the US aren’t pirating at all. Well, SOPA will not stop torrent websites because it was written by incompetent people.
Like we’ve said many times, we do not have to give up now. Keep hurting the SOPA-supporting companies’ pockets by refusing to buy anything that belongs to them.
