Kodak Sues Samsung For Patent Infringement, While Filing For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Kodak is going through a hard time as the company’s stock has decreased along with the revenue, profits, and reputation. The firm is looking to get a part of it back therefore it has filed suit against HTC and Apple for infringing up to 5 patents. Allegedly, the smartphone makers have borrowed some Kodak patents referring to digital imaging technology and the way the devices capture photos and email them using a data network. As if focusing in a war against two of the biggest smartphone vendors wasn’t enough, Kodak also filed suit against Samsung.

The filing has virtually the same demands as the two previous ones as Samsung allegedly uses Kodak technology when capturing and sending images. Up until now, the ITC Judges in control of the proceedings haven’t released any preliminary statements, while HTC, Apple, and “Sammy” said that they will do everything they can to protect themselves.

Today’s press release says that the suit against Samsung has been filed in Western District, New York and that the South Korean company is infringing 5 patents. The reason why Kodak sued and why is probably preparing to sue more companies is because it wants to get several money back before officially entering bankruptcy.

In a very different process, Kodak filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 protection. The company needs the money in order to save itself from remaining just a company which has pioneered the photography business. Current Chairman and CEO said that there are a number of reasons why Kodak will revive itself and it will continue to be a company that provides world-class digital imaging technology and science materials.

Antonio Perez announced that Kodak gathered about $950 million in order to allow the company to continue its work until the lawsuits and the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process will be over. The United States will now have to decide exactly how the photo firm will be saved and what to do while being restructured.

Analysts believe that Kodak will have a very hard time in getting any money out of HTC, Apple, Samsung, or any other company that may be sued in the near future. Truth is that Kodak might not save itself from going entirely bankrupt and selling its patents might help a little, but not too much.

On the other hand, Kodak says that it wants to get as much money as possible for the investors and shareholders. Well, we always knew that big companies are in it for the money.
