The market has been the same for some years now, and if you see a company gaining more profit from products that means another one is losing ground. And this can be easily seen from the earnings at Nintendo in the third quarter for example, when they dropped by 61% in comparison to the previous quarter.
But things could change with the introduction of what appears to be a Nintendo Network. Fans everywhere will probably say: better late than never. According to company head Satoru Iwata, you will be able to have numerous competitions and also a lot of communication between users. In addition, all the content would be allowed for purchase on digital from now on. Moving to the Wii U, it appears that personal accounts can be created by every user.
There is yet no info if the downloaded content will be stuck on the hardware or it will be offered to the user on devices but because Wii U gets personal accounts we can assume that in this case it will be stuck on the account. What we know is that we will have an infrastructure that allows not only add-on content but also the option of fully downloadable games.
At the beginning, the concept was targeting Nintendo 3DS users, and with the time passing it appears that their infrastructure will be able to be extended to other products. However, the first platform will apparently be Wii U. There isn’t any exact date of when it will be launched or even how advanced the work is. Mario Kart 7 will enjoy the new launch and also there will be some DLC in the upcoming Final Fantasy game. These will be probably the first games where the new network will be tested, and the first feedbacks will appear.
Now returning a little to the sales part we’ve spoken about at the beginning, this could be a nice fresh breath of air Nintendo urgently needs especially with the 3DS not selling as they hoped. Also seeing companies like Apple increasing more and more in profit it appears that it isn’t impossible even with the recession on the corner. I have confidence that Nintendo has the possibility to survive because let’s admit it: what would the world be without Mario?
