Megaupload’s Storage Partners May Begin Deleting Users’ Data As Of This Thursday

The Megaupload saga doesn’t look like it’s going to end soon, but the users who were still hoping to get their data back will be very angry to hear that the content on the website’s servers will be deleted as soon as this Thursday. According to the Feds, it’s not their fault that the users will not be able to get their personal documents back, and only Megaupload is to be blamed because the website was storing illegal download on its servers.
When the FBI and the Department of Justice closed Megaupload, they didn’t give time to the users to get back their data, and it was never in the plan to do so. The prosecutors shut down the website for storing copyright infringing material like motives, and songs. As most of the uploads were public, anybody could have accessed the content therefore a US Judge ordered the closing of the website along thus leaving millions of users without access to their files.
Megaupload said that it’s not their fault for what users were uploading, and added that the Feds should’ve only taken down the alleged infringing material, not the whole website. There are more than 50 million Megaupload users, and most of them used the website to store personal data like photos, own music, files, documents, and other content important to them.
As the website was shut down, the users couldn’t get their data back. The lawyers of the company said that Megaupload is using two storage companies,В Carpathia Hosting Inc. and Cogent Communications Group Inc., and that the content is currently safe. However, the situation will change this Thursday when Megaupload will be asked to pay the two companies, but it won’t be able to do so because the Feds blocked the accounts of the website.
Carpathia Hosting, and Cogent Communications will begin deleting the data on its servers because Megaupload’s payment will be overdue. Currently, the website’s assets have been frozen, and the lawyers’ requests to be “de-frozen” have been declined.
It is said that the US Government copied a lot of data from Megaupload’s servers, but it doesn’t have the right to access it, and it doesn’t have the right to delete it. The prosecutors said that Megaupload will have to clean up after its own mess, and it’s the company’s duty to solve its problems with the two storage firms.
The company’s lawyers asked the Judge who is in charge of this case to allow Megaupload to use its money to pay Carpathia and Cogent, motivating that the data is very important to this case in order to prove that Megaupload isn’t a website created to host illegal content. The lawyers added that the US Government should do everything to provide protection to consumers, instead of doing everything against them.
Anyway, this matter is becoming more and more complicated as the website’s lawyers say that Megaupload is not based in the United States, as its headquarters are in Hong Kong. Still, the Feds say that some of the company’s servers are based in Virginia, US therefore they had every right to act.
There are 3 days left for Megaupload to pull an ace out of its sleeve, and do something to ensure that the users’ data will continue to be stored. Stay tuned, we will let you know if anything new surfaces.
